White Sox acquire 1B Alonso from Indians

CHICAGO (AP) First baseman Yonder Alonso was traded to the Chicago White Sox by the Cleveland Indians on Friday in a deal between AL Central rivals that could have broad implications for both teams the rest of the offseason.

A person familiar with the trade confirmed it on condition of anonymity because the clubs had not yet announced the swap. Stadium first reported Alonso was headed to the White Sox.

Chicago sent minor league outfielder Alex Call to Cleveland for Alonso, who hit .250 with 23 homers and 83 RBIs in 145 games this year during his only season with the Indians.

Orioles officially name Hyde manager

BALTIMORE (AP) The Baltimore Orioles hired Brandon Hyde to be their new manager Friday, hoping his experience as Cubs bench coach will help the team move forward while in rebuilding mode.

Hyde takes over for Buck Showalter, who was fired after Baltimore finished 47-115 - the worst record in the majors. This will be Hyde's first stint as a major league manager.

Wife of George Steinbrenner dies at 83

NEW YORK (AP) Joan Steinbrenner, the wife of late New York Yankees owner George Steinbrenner, died Friday. She was 83.

The Yankees said she died surrounded by family at her home in Tampa, Florida.

BoSox, Yanks to open London set at night

NEW YORK (AP) The World Series champion Boston Red Sox and the New York Yankees will open Major League Baseball's first series in Britain with a night game and conclude the next day in the afternoon.

MLB said Friday that the June 29 game at London's Olympic Stadium will start at 6:10 p.m. local time (1:10 p.m. EDT) and be broadcast in the United States by Fox as part of its Saturday "Game of the Week" coverage.

White Sox, C McCann agree to 1-year deal

CHICAGO (AP) The Chicago White Sox answered one of their offseason questions on Friday, agreeing to a $2.5 million, one-year contract with catcher James McCann.

The White Sox had an opening at the position after trading Omar Narvaez to Seattle on Nov. 30 for reliever Alex Colome. They also lost Kevan Smith when he was claimed off waivers by the Los Angeles Angels in October.

LAS VEGAS (AP) Seattle Mariners general manager Jerry Dipoto was in a hospital, making a trade from a bed.

Cleveland counterpart Chris Antonetti was boarding a plane headed back home, trying to finalize the deal before the flight pulled away from the gate.

Mets bring back Familia for 3 yrs., $30M

NEW YORK (AP) Jeurys Familia and the Mets finalized a $30 million, three-year contract on Friday, bringing the reliever back to New York, where he figures to serve as a setup man for newly acquired closer Edwin Diaz.

Familia gets a $2 million signing bonus payable on equal installments on July 1 and Dec. 10 next year. He has salaries of $6 million in 2019 and $11 million in each of the final two seasons. The Mets will defer $1 million of his 2020 salary, payable on Jan. 15, 2022. They will defer the same amount of his 2021 pay, payable on July 1, 2022.

A's 3B Chapman has shoulder surgery

OAKLAND, Calif. (AP) Oakland Athletics third baseman Matt Chapman had surgery Friday on his left shoulder, his second operation this offseason.

Dr. William Workman performed a distal clavicle resection procedure on Chapman's shoulder, the team said Friday. The Gold Glove Award winner is expected to begin swinging a bat in six weeks.

Dodgers to ink P Kelly for 3 years, $25M

LAS VEGAS (AP) Reliever Joe Kelly agreed Thursday to a $25 million, three-year contract with the Los Angeles Dodgers, a person familiar with the negotiations told The Associated Press.

The person spoke on condition of anonymity because the deal had not yet been announced.
