Cubs' Bryant out after pitch hits helmet

DENVER (AP) Chicago Cubs star Kris Bryant has left Sunday's game after being hit on the head with a 96 mph pitch from Colorado's German Marquez.

The ball made a loud sound as it hit off the underside of the flap of his helmet, and it was not immediately clear how much direct contact it made his Bryant's head.

Cubs spokesman Peter Chase said Bryant passed tests and had no sign of a concussion. Chase said Bryant had a cut under an eye.

Severino tops Jays, Yanks' Torres debuts

NEW YORK (AP) Luis Severino pitched three-hit ball over seven innings, prized prospect Gleyber Torres went 0 for 4 in his big league debut and the youthful New York Yankees beat the Toronto Blue Jays 5-1 on Sunday.

Didi Gregorius homered, No. 9 batter Austin Romine laced a two-run double and rookie Miguel Andujar had a career-high four hits, including an RBI double, to help the Yankees take three of four in the series from their AL East rivals.

Phils sweep Bucs on Altherr hit in 11th

PHILADELPHIA (AP) Aaron Altherr's RBI single in the bottom of the 11th inning lifted the Phillies to a 3-2 victory over Pittsburgh on Sunday, giving Philadelphia its first four-game sweep over the Pirates in 24 years.

Andrew Knapp hit an opposite-field triple off the left-field wall with one out off Rich Rodriguez (0-1). With the infield in, Altherr lined a 1-2 pitch to left for his third hit. He raised his hand in the air, ran to first and got mobbed by teammates.

Rockies place OF Gonzalez on 10-day DL

DENVER (AP) The Colorado Rockies have placed outfielder Carlos Gonzalez on the 10-day disabled list with a right hamstring strain.

The Rockies also announced that outfielder Gerardo Parra has dropped his appeal and began serving a four-game suspension Sunday for his part in a bench-clearing brawl against San Diego on April 11.

Mets-Braves postponement sets record

ATLANTA (AP) Major League Baseball had its 26th postponement of the season when the New York Mets and Atlanta Braves were washed out Sunday, the most related to weather through April since the commissioner's officer started keeping records in 1986.

There were also 26 postponements through April in 2007, but one game then was called off following the death of St. Louis pitcher Josh Hancock.

Cardinals improve to 7-0 vs. woeful Reds

ST. LOUIS (AP) Kolten Wong and Paul DeJong homered, Mike Mikolas tossed seven strong innings and the St. Louis Cardinals completed their second sweep of the woeful Cincinnati Reds this season with a 9-2 victory on Sunday.

The Cardinals have won eight of nine overall and 11 in a row over the Reds.

Gomez HR in 9th helps Rays sweep Twins

ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. (AP) Slumping Carlos Gomez hit a two-run homer in the ninth inning and the Tampa Bay Rays completed a three-game sweep Sunday by beating the Minnesota Twins 8-6.

C.J. Cron opened the ninth with a single off Addison Reed (0-1) and Gomez, mired in a 2-for-38 slide, hit the next pitch over the left field wall.

Moustakas' HR lifts Royals over Tigers

DETROIT (AP) Mike Moustakas hit a tiebreaking, three-run homer in the seventh inning, and the Kansas City Royals outlasted the Detroit Tigers 8-5 on Sunday to earn a split of their four-game series.

Abraham Almonte hit a grand slam in the sixth to give the Royals a 5-2 lead, but Detroit tied it with three runs in the bottom of the inning. Kansas City took the lead again when Drew VerHagen (0-1) walked two batters in the seventh and Moustakas hit a drive to right off Buck Farmer.

Angels' Ohtani to hit cleanup vs. Giants

ANAHEIM, Calif. (AP) Japanese two-way sensation Shohei Ohtani threw a bullpen session Sunday about 90 minutes before he was to bat cleanup for the first time for the Los Angeles Angels.

Ohtani, who bats left-handed and throws right, was moved into the fourth spot in the order because Albert Pujols got his first day off this season.
